Writing a Speech - What Can It Teach Us?
Writing a Speech - What Can It Teach Us?Writing a speech is not something anyone wants to do, and certainly it's not something that anyone should want to do. And yet, we all must do it, and we all know that we have to do it to get through the business of our lives, whether it's a job interview or a banquet speech. So it's helpful to know what speech writing can teach us, and if you're worried about how to do it, don't be!The first thing a good speech can teach you is confidence. I'm sure that you've encountered people who get nervous when they're in front of a crowd, but who seem to be relaxed and at ease in private, even with the best of us. That's because they know that the only person who can tell them whether they are convincing or not is themselves. If you find yourself getting nervous before you start to write your speech, stop what you're doing, gather your thoughts, and just take a deep breath. Take some time, and calm down. You'll be amazed at how much you can accomplish by b eing quiet for a while. The second thing that a good speech can teach you is how to write the right words. Many people, including many of us, worry that they might run out of good things to say when they start writing their speeches. (They should never, ever worry this way.) The truth is that you are what you think about - not the things you say.Your thoughts can help you to think of topics that you may not have thought of before, or they can cause you to consider ways to express what you'd like to say, but weren't sure how to begin. It is these thoughts that will become your words, and the things you will begin to say. So take some time to notice your thoughts, and think about how you can connect them to what you'd like to say.Your speech should come from within you, and it should not be a product of what other people want you to say. Keep in mind that you are more likely to speak about something that is relevant to your speaking abilities, and what you feel. By using your inner voi ce to create your words, and by realizing that the audience is not the one listening to you speak, you'll be able to focus on creating powerful statements. Finally, your speech should reflect your values. Not only should your speech reflect the things that you believe in, but it should also reflect the values that you live by. Be sure to include those aspects of your personality that are particularly important to you. When you write your speech, remember to be as simple as possible. And do not let your fear of the task prevent you from taking action. So think about what you'd like to say, write it down, and start planning that next speech!
